The global credit crunch and its aftermath is forecast to accelerate large-scale job losses in major economies including Britain and the United States, while Canada manages a relatively enviable performance of zero growth.
In Britain, the jobless rate hit an eight-year high last month and Bank of England policy maker David Blanchflower expects two million people could be on the dole by year end.
